Window Energy Ratings (WER)

A method for consumers to quickly compare the energy efficiency of competing products

A - G scale

The scale used to rate the windows based on their energy efficiency, A being the most energy efficient. The WER assesses the whole window energy performance, covering the frame material, the frame design, the glass type and the components that make up the window. Computer simulations are used to generate the WER which takes account of solar gain (G factor), thermal transmittance (U value) and air permeability (L factor).

Energy Saving Trust

A Trust established by the UK Government in 1993 in order to deliver a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2010.

Energy Saving Recommended Label

Windows with a C rating or higher can carry the blue energy saving recommended label, awarded by the Energy Saving Trust.
