Orangeries
An Orangery was a building in the grounds of fashionable residences from the 17th to the 19th centuries and given a classicising architectural form. The name reflects the original use of the building as a place where citrus trees were often wintered in tubs under cover, surviving harsh frosts though not expected to flower or fruit.
Its origins come from the Renaissance gardens of Italy, when glass making technology enabled sufficient expanses of clear glass to be produced. Whilst in the north, the Dutch led the way in developing expanses of window glass in Orangeries, though engravings illustrating Dutch manuals showed them with solid roofs; both vaulted and beamed. This soon created a situation where Orangeries became a symbol status among the wealthy with the glazed roof being a development of the early nineteenth century.

Still based on the original designs, todays modern Orangeries really are as awe inspiring as they look and for sheer practicality and quality of life, few things come close to a stunning Orangery. For those hoping to create a combination of substantial structure and that outdoor living feel, an Orangery offers the ideal blend. Designed to perfectly complement the style of your home the addition of an Orangery will provide a light and airy open living space all year round.
